Plan the ride
Take with you

A touring ride on the Munda Biddi and a downhill session in Murray Valley are different outings. Decide whether you want a steady journey, technical singletrack or descending trails. Check your bike is suitable for the intended terrain and ask a qualified workshop about its condition if you are unsure.

Trail grades describe technical difficulty, not how fresh your legs will feel. Look for surface, gradients, features and direction of travel. Green trails still assume basic mountain-bike skills. Captain Hook, for example, is listed as moderate and has tight, steep climbing switchbacks; short does not mean easy.

Use the current network map to understand how a trail links back to the start. Check one-way directions and whether the return involves a climb, road or booked shuttle. Do not assume an individual downhill trail is a complete loop. Follow signs and closures on the day.

Choose an outing within your skills, with enough daylight and energy to finish. A shorter ride helps you learn how the surface and bike feel. Stop before a feature you cannot assess confidently. A social ride or instruction can help, but check suitability with the organiser rather than assuming every group welcomes beginners.

Trail pages and downloaded maps can lag behind maintenance and diversions. Follow DBCA park alerts and current signage. The Year 1 listing carried a maintenance notice when researched; check its current status rather than treating an old recommendation as permission to ride.

Carry water, food, weather protection, navigation and a first-aid kit, with a helmet and equipment suited to the ride. Bring bike tools and spares you know how to use. Arrange mechanical preparation with a bicycle workshop; Base Camp is not a repair workshop.

Does green mean flat?

No. Read the trail description as well as its grade. A beginner trail can still involve climbing, loose surfaces or features that require basic riding skills.

Is a shuttle included?

Do not assume there is a shuttle or that it is running. Check dates, pickup points, bike requirements and bookings directly with the operator.
