Day walk or overnight?

A day walk needs space for water, food, weather layers and your essential kit. An overnight load adds shelter, sleeping equipment and cooking needs. Assemble the full load before deciding on a pack.

Start with fit, then capacity

A capacity label alone cannot tell you how a backpack will carry. Check the size guidance, torso fit and adjustment range for the exact model, and leave room for the equipment your trip requires.

Protect what must stay dry

Separate sleeping gear, clothing and electronics inside suitable storage. Check whether a bag is intended for use inside a pack or exposed to abrasion and weather. A dry bag is not automatically suitable for submersion.

Make room for the right gear

Which hiking gear earns a place in your pack?

A day hike and an overnight trek need different carrying systems. Start with your packed equipment, then compare fit and access. These are starting points from our range, not a complete trip checklist.

A compact day-hiking backpack

Compare the Osprey Sportlite 15 when your layers, food and water fit into a smaller load.

Before you choose

Pack everything first. A small bag only works if the essentials fit without being left behind.

A larger trekking backpack

Compare the Osprey Kestrel 58 when your load includes overnight equipment.

Before you choose

Add food and water to the test load. Extra space is useful only if the loaded harness fits comfortably.

Compare weight for the exact pack size, then consider the complete loaded weight. The lightest empty pack is not automatically the best choice for your equipment.
